Debt problems? Act now to avoid paying later.

Debt Advice Now reminds anyone having problems with their debts about the importance of getting good advice - sooner rather than later.

Financial solutions company Debt Advice Now has underlined just how crucial it is for anyone dealing with debt problems to get helpful, professional advice as soon as possible.

The comments follow figures released in R3's latest Personal Debt Snapshot, indicating that although debt problems currently affect over 18 million (39%) of UK adults, only 1.4 million - just 3% - intend to get advice on how to deal with their debts in the next six months.

Furthermore, the findings suggest that one in four people (25%) do not think it's clear where they can get good debt advice - yet 41% of those surveyed who had taken debt advice said they wished they'd done so sooner.

R3 President Frances Coulson said: "This snapshot uncovers the huge unwillingness to take debt advice. This is frustrating as we know the experience of those who seek proper advice is invariably positive."

A spokesperson for Debt Advice Now comments: "It's certainly concerning that such a large number of people worried about their debts aren't getting the professional advice that could help them - and so are risking letting their debt problems get even worse.

"It may be tempting to bury your head in the sand if you're struggling to cope with debts you've lost control of, but when it comes to your finances, ignorance really isn't bliss. Indeed, the longer you avoid the problem, the worse your circumstances could become: mounting fees and charges, damage to your credit rating and even eventual legal action form your lenders - such as County Court Judgments (CCJs) - can see things go from bad to worse.

"What's more, if you've fallen behind on any debts you've secured against your home, such as a mortgage, missing your monthly repayments - and not making them in the long term - could lead to your home being repossessed.

"If you're in the situation where you can no longer afford your debt repayments, speaking to a professional debt adviser is crucial. Remember that any conversations you have with a professional debt expert will be totally confidential - so you won't have to worry about other people knowing about your problems.

"Professional debt advice organisations deal with hundreds of calls from people worried about their debts every day - and they have the experience and know-how to help people find the best approach for their situation. Whether you simply need to make a few changes to your monthly budget, or you need an entirely new approach to your debt management, getting guidance from a professional debt adviser could give you the peace of mind that you're in safe hands - and help you find the best approach to a debt-free future."
