Markham Metal Braces Expert Explains What To Ask at Second Opinion

by Arun Rajasekaran Thursday, February 07, 2013
Markham, Ontario – When visiting an orthodontist in Markham for treatment as an adult or child, the treatment possibilities are seemingly endless. So how does a patient know the doctor they are seeing is the right doctor for them?
"Every orthodontist has different training and unique personalities, and probably different treatment plans they'll propose," says Dr. Arun Rajasekaran, whose Markham office provides metal braces. "Patients should look for an orthodontist with whom they feel comfortable, but also offers the treatment plan that works best for the patient."
Patients should not be afraid to ask questions of the orthodontist they see, and shouldn't be afraid to seek out a second opinion.
One orthodontist might think Invisalign Markham is the best treatment plan for a teen patient while another thinks standard braces is the way to go. Patients who arm themselves with some questions will be better equipped to ensure they've paired up the right orthodontist and the right treatment plan.
• How does the orthodontist propose to correct an overbite, or fix crowding? Don't be afraid to ask why the orthodontist recommends that treatment.
• When does the orthodontist think it's best to begin treatment – before or after all baby teeth have fallen out?
• Approximately how long will treatment last? Will there be any follow-up needed after treatment is finished?
• Ask to see pictures of patients who've had similar treatment to see results.
Always discuss fees with the orthodontist or treatment coordinator before agreeing to treatment. Don't be afraid to ask why prices are different if one orthodontist quotes a much higher or lower price than another. Always ask what that price includes and if there will be any other fees associated with the cost of treatment.
"When in doubt, ask for referrals from people you trust," says Rajasekaran, who provides Richmond Hill residents with the best in cutting edge braces technology. "Family, friends and your dentist can give recommendations based on their experiences."
And remember, the most important thing to do before, during and even after treatment is ask questions.
