Shravan Gupta adding his flavour to Punjabi Tadka

Punjabi Tadka, a cooking Contest was hosted in Amritsar on 1 May, as a way to provide pathway to success for ambitious cooks. It aimed to promote innovation and quality in ethnic cuisine. Amritsari cooks of the nearby restaurants and hotels were invited to participate whole-heartedly in the Open Cooking Contest by bringing their Special Punjabi dishes. A jury of two best chefs was invited to judge the competition and then select the best in all the three rounds. The competition differed breaking the humdrum of the other cooking contests as here the contestants had to prepare three course meals. The round one comprised preparation of starters, the participants had to prepare a main course dish in the second round and the third round comprised preparation of sweet dish. Marks were allocated in each round and the best three participants with maximum marks were given the prizes.

The participants prepared special dishes adding their tinch of innovation to them to prove the excellence of their ideas and practical skills in cooking. The contest began at 10 in morning with each round stretched for 40 minutes and 20 minutes interval after each round. Unique cuisines and lip-smacking flavours of Punjab were the USP of the competition.

The jury judged the best recipe at the contest, and gave prizes to the eventual winners. The first prize was won by Shravan Gupta, Mr. Amit Sharma won the second prize and Mr. Surjeet Singh won the third prize. Shravan Gupta expressed his happiness on winning the competition saying, “I had been fond of both cooking as well as eating since teenage and have always strived to try out new recipes with innovative names and varied ingredients that enhance the taste and aroma. To follow my ambition, I chose a blend of dishes, starter being tandoori tikka, Dahi karee as the main course dish and finally to sweeten the tastebuds, the desert had to be none other than jalebi. I am glad that the judges praised the dishes prepared by me and they especially liked the garnishing too. ”

The competition lived up to its name “Punjabi Tadka” as all the dishes were the innovation of Punjab, with specific ingredients and preparation method unique to the culture of that place. The Winners were indeed brilliant and they have a long way to go in the field. One of the judges of the competition said, “I simply love the flavours of Punjab and when it comes to innovation in Punjabi flavor, it only gets better and that’s what we could feel on tasting the dishes of the various participants. It was a difficult task to choose the best ones but this is what we were here for. Shravan Gupta had an edge over the others for the fact that his selection of ingredients was exceptional and I could feel the flavor of each spice that went into the preparation of the dishes.
