Laguna Niguel, Calif., August 31, 2009 – Sixty percent of adults in American cities are single, making them the largest group of adults in America. New York City’s singles popular is almost 70 percent. The marriage rate in America is half of what it was in 1970. Is this because adults no longer seek meaningful relationships? Or is it because it is more difficult than ever to meet people? Or even meet people who share the same values? Our society has grown accustomed to living life alone. How can singles start thriving in their everyday lives?
Dave Sloan started the Catholic Thrive conferences for these very reasons. “The mission of Catholic Thrive is to bring singles and young adults out of the isolation of modern life and into the family life of the Church,” Sloan said. “Life is meant to be lived and celebrated and that’s what we talk about at the Thrive conferences.”
On the heels of a successful first Catholic Thrive conference over Memorial Day weekend in Anaheim, Calif, Catholic Thrive looks forward to introducing the East Coast to the same exciting experience. The second Catholic Thrive conference will be held September 5-7, 2009 in New York, N.Y. Scheduled for Labor Day weekend in the heart of the most populous U.S. city, the conference seeks to bring together a broad cross-section of Catholics – both committed and those who have rarely been involved with the Church.
Discussion topics will include helping people to overcome adversity, forming better relationships with family, friends, and co-workers, developing a richer prayer life and more. Presenters include actress Jessica Rey, psychologist Phil Mango, best-selling author Matthew Kelly, Fathers Agustino Torres, C.F.R. and Stan Fortuna, as well as speakers who are specialists in professional networking, relationship advice and theology.
“We have tried to provide a diverse group of speakers and events,” Sloan said. “We want this weekend to not only be about deepening our Catholic faith, but also be about connecting with others in a fun and exhilarating way.”
A praise and worship band, gala dance and fundraiser, and service project will enhance the weekend for those seeking additional networking and fellowship opportunities. Additionally, popular SIRIUS/XM Satellite Radio’s “The Catholic Guy” Lino Rulli will host his version of former TV gameshow “The Dating Game.” The Most Reverend Timothy Dolan, participating in his first young adult event as newly-ordained Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York, will cap off the weekend with Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday at noon.
