Some facts on liquid level sensors

Liquid level sensors are required to designate the level of any liquid inside a container or tank. The detection of the level of liquid is complex to a wide range of processes. A large a variety of applications is in existence that can be used to detect the level of liquid to some degree. Various types of tanks like automobiles tanks are installed with liquid level switch to monitor the changing fuel level in the fuel tanks. The level of liquid is usually sensed by receiving a clear indication if the fluid attains a premeditated level. Further, if it receives an analog representation of the level it changes and passes, the level can be checked.

Liquid level sensors employ various types of float operated devices, capacitative mechanisms, acoustic mechanisms and resistance mechanisms. The most commonly used sensor is the variable resistor sensor that uses a float for the production of a resistance change inside the resistor, operated by liquid level switch. The capacitative level usually includes a reference and a measuring capacitor. It is installed fully submerged in the fluid. The electro optical sensors function on the law of diverse indices of refraction that occurs between a gaseous medium and the transparent body over the fluid.

Employed to measure the level of liquids like oil and water, some of the applications depend on consistent monitoring of the fluid level. These liquid level sensors use an array of methods like pressure, vibration, and ultrasound. The pressure membrane present in the sensors regulated by the liquid level switch measures the existing and the changing pressure in vessels like the storage or holding tank. The ultrasonic sensors make use of a piezoelectric crystal technology to detect the increase, decrease, presence and absence of the vibration, constantly. In fact, in some of the applications, it is needed to measure up the fluid level without getting into direct contact with the media.

Some of the liquid level sensors are programmable. They can filter the vibration transmitted in the signal due to certain factors. The microwave or radar sensor systems measure the microwave pulse transmitted to the process material. Other sensors like radio frequency, magnetic, rotation paddles, air bubblers, etc. operate with an indicating display along with a digital or analog output. All these can be controlled by a liquid level switch that stays connected with the systems. These sensors are highly useful for both small automobiles as well as big industrial purposes.

Liquid level sensors can be used to measure the level of a fluid inside a container or in natural forms like in lakes, rivers, etc. the measurement can be done in either point values or continuous. While the point value is vaguer and only indicates if the fluid is over or below the sensing point, the continuous is more exact and accurate.
