Zoos are supposed to be a place where happy families can take their children to see animals from far off places. Where children can meet creatures from exotic lands. Where people can enjoy what mother nature has provided us. They are not supposed to be the gates of hell.

We see the images all the time in the media. The horrible stories of animals fighting for their lives, in cages too small, areas unkept, starving to death and living in torment.

What happens when you see those images and realize that the atrocities are taking place in your own country? Not just your own country, but your very own back yard.

Let's take a look to Three Hills, a small town in Alberta. And as we turn our gaze from the horrific images we see about animals in third world countries, we see the very same things happening in a “Zoo” right here in Canada. Only a few hours from my home.

The zoo in question is called Guzoo, and to the amazement of those viewing these images, it has been around since 1989, the very same year the owner, Gustafson, was convicted for illegal possession of exotic animals!

People have fought for just as many years to have this zoo shut down.

Groups like Zoocheck have come and gone, their voices unheard. Who am I to take this on? I'm not a animal rights activist, I am not a corporate giant, I am simply a young mother of five children, ready and willing to take up the fight.

Like children, these animals need to be protected. They need to be loved, they need to be cared for.

There are many in power who know what is going on here, yet they turn a blind eye. Lack of caring? Lack of compassion? I don't honestly know. What they are though are silent accomplices to this cruelty and inhumanity.

Guzoo is breaking the law. Just a look at the latest Zoocheck report points out numerous issues with this zoo, yet their license is set to renew in just a few days. And unless, we as people who love and care stand up, they will get their license, and be able to continue the torture and torment that they are inflicting on these poor animals, including endangered ones!

Like our children, these animals don't have voices. We need to unite and be their voices. This “zoo” must be shut down, and it's owners prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I wonder how they'll like being behind bars? Too bad it would be inhumane to show them the same care and attention they have shown the animals in their care.
